Washington County Code Enforcement
You complete a Washington County permit application and take it first to your local town or village compliance officer, who decides whether the project needs zoning or planning board review. Once the municipality is satisfied, that officer signs a form in the application packet, and you then submit to Washington County Code Enforcement for the permit. The county lists a small detached shed up to 144 square feet as the exception.

Washington County Code Enforcement (Washington County Sanitary Code)
The same county department enforces the Washington County Sanitary Code, Local Law No. 1 of 1988, alongside the building code. It reviews plans and issues permits for work that must meet the Sanitary Code, publishes a Sewage Disposal System Application, and issues certificates of compliance once the work passes.

The Park boundary in state law runs up the western line of the Town of Whitehall and along the Dresden town line to South Bay, so the county's northwest corner is inside the Blue Line. There, an APA Jurisdictional Inquiry Form comes first; required permits must be issued before clearing starts.

- In the Towns of Fort Ann and Dresden, the Lake George Park Commission itself administers the stormwater permit program for land in the Lake George Park. A permit is needed before creating more than 1,000 square feet of impervious surface or clearing, grading or filling more than 5,000 square feet.
- New flood maps
- Washington County's Real Property Tax Service posts that new FEMA flood maps for the county took effect on 21 July 2026. Check the new map for any parcel near the Hudson, the Batten Kill or another stream before you buy, since a mapped flood zone changes where and how you can build.
