February 2025 snow collapses: The National Weather Service in Buffalo reports that a week of lake-effect snow in February 2025 dropped nearly six feet across Oswego and southern Lewis counties and brought down more than 50 structures from excessive snow load, most of them in Oswego County.
Collapse count during the storm response: During the county's response to that storm, Oswego County fire officials reported 63 confirmed structural collapses called in to 911, and county officials warned that rain added to the snow raised the risk further.
Zoning is local: The county planning division keeps a list of each town and village's zoning ordinance or land development law, and notes that residents should verify the current version with their local government. Several towns show no document on that list, so ask the town directly.

How much does a barndominium cost in Oswego County?

Do I need a building permit for a barndominium in Oswego County?

Yes, from the town, village or city where the land is, not from the county. Code enforcement officers apply the state Uniform Code, so a permit applied for since 31 December 2025 is reviewed under the 2025 Residential Code of New York State. On a lot without sewer, the septic plan also needs Oswego County Health Department approval.

Will a barndominium hold up to Tug Hill snow?

It will if it is designed for its site. New York sets ground snow loads by state map, adjusted for elevation, so a high lot toward the Tug Hill can call for a heavier design load than one near the lake. We use a kit manufacturer's engineered frame sized for that load, and we plan roof shape and snow-shed zones so snow does not pile against doors or the shop entrance.
